ESNEFT – ICENI – Ophthalmology – iGLEAMS 2 – Fri 12th + Sat 13th May 2023

Following the great success of the inaugural East Anglian Glaucoma Microsurgical Symposium last year, the 2nd first-of-its-kind Conference, iGLEAMS 2, took place on 12th and 13th May 2023 at the ICENI Centre and the Essex Business School of the University of Essex under the auspices of ESNEFT and East Anglia Deanery, Health Education England, School of Ophthalmology.

Mr Chrysostomos Dimitriou, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Glaucoma Lead at ESNEFT, has founded EAGLAMS, recently rebranded as iGLEAMS, on Saturday 10/10/2020 with the first successful 2-day symposium delivered on 20th and 21st May 2022. Mr Dimitriou has been the chair and organiser of the past 2 symposia with participation of over 200 delegates, trainees, fellows, consultants and representatives of the pharmaceutical eye industry over the last couple of years.

iGLEAMS addresses the need of a dedicated conference in the newly developed field of MiGS with lively exchange of ideas, information, innovation and simulation on cutting-edge new technologies and state-of-the-art advancements in the ever-evolving armamentarium of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, MiGS, MiBS and MiMS, with the latter coming soon to a theatre near you!

The Symposium is hosted by the world-renowned ICENI Centre, an exceptional 2-storey surgical simulation centre with outstanding facilities comprising seven latest model Leica surgical simulation microscopes, TriTeQ3 DRV 3D and NGENUITY 3D visualisation systems, EyeSi Virtual Reality stereo-simulation system, large variety of model eyes for artificial Glaucoma Simulation Surgery on MiGS, MiBS, MiMS, Tubes, Trabeculectomy, Aqueous Shunts and many more.

Friday 12th May 2023 was action-packed and full hands-on surgical simulation on 12 x MiGS in 3 different rooms with 3 x STEMI and 1 x DRV 3D each (12 stations) all at the dedicated ICENI Simulation Centre with skills taught and delivered by national and international experts, augmented by the pharmaceutical industry.

Saturday 13th May 2023 comprised a stellar cast of eminent Speakers, all of whom are key opinion leaders in the field of micro-invasive glaucoma surgery. NGENUITY 3D Videos were projected during the day accompanied by Slido interactive sessions with audience voting, and, finally, three prestigious awards were won for best presentations at the conference. Prof Sheng Lim, Prof Tarek Shaarawy, Prof André Mermoud with fellow Leandro Oliverio, Mr Imran Masood, Mr Dan Lindfield, Mr Andrew Tatham, Mr Gok Ratnarajan, Mr Ian Rodrigues, all delivered fascinating presentations of various MiGS topics. Guest star, Mr Lukan Mishev, the pan-European NGENUITY master, taught us some of his little tips and tricks on optimisation of 3D visualisation systems with polychromatic filters.

The next iGLEAMS 3rd Symposium is scheduled for Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th October 2024, highlighting the use of 3D technology in Ophthalmic Simulation via the NGENUITY and OCULUS gonio-imaging facilities for MiGS surgery and also MiMS surgery for the first time in the history of East of England. Additionally, there will be a new session by the name MiGS FEAST (Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery For East Anglia Specialty Trainees) generously supported by the Head of School of Ophthalmology, the ICENI Centre and the Trust.

Full accreditation has been awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (10 CPD points). For more information, please visit: https://icenicentre.org/courses/ophthalmology/
